Barbara Lorraine Smith, age 97, of Mehoopany, PA, passed away on Wednesday morning, July 22, 2026, at the Tunkhannock Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Tunkhannock, PA.

Barbara was born in Jenningsville, PA, on May 2, 1929, to Lewis V. and Mary L. Stevens Robinson. She grew up in Jenningsville and attended Mehoopany School. On June 5, 1954, she married the love of her life, Ralph “Pete” L. Smith.

Barbara worked for 20 years in the cleaning department at Procter & Gamble and spent another 8 years in the cafeteria at Tyler Memorial Hospital.

Barbara was extremely active in her church throughout her life. She was a lifelong member of the Jenningsville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed attending Bible Study and was an avid reader of the Daily Bread.

Along with being a housewife, homemaker, and mother, Barbara also authored the Jenningsville News section of the Rocket Courier for 62 years and the New Age Examiner for many years, providing regular updates on local weather, church gatherings, and happenings. It was a task she took over from her grandmother, faithfully writing her “items” every Sunday evening for as long as she was able. Barbara also enjoyed getting out and about in her community and loved visiting with friends, family, and neighbors.

She is survived her son, Lon Smith of Jenningsville, PA; her grandchildren, Wendy Salsman (Dell) of Mehoopany, PA; Shayna Dimmick (Jeremy) of Dushore, PA, and Waylon Smith (Ashley) of Wysox, PA; her great grandchildren, Dana Carey, Chance Carey, Kahlen Dimmick, Kyrie Dimmick, Severn Dimmick, Rosalie Smith, and Lilliana Smith; 4 great-great grandchildren; her sister, Rosemary Bellows of Idaho; her brothers John Robinson of Meshoppen, PA and Randy Robinson of Tunkhannock, PA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband and parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her son, Ralph Smith, Jr.; her sisters, Bernice Goodwin and Laura Lou Robinson; and her brothers, Allen Robinson, A. Carmon Robinson, Lewis Robinson, and Ira “Butch” Robinson.

A memorial service for Barbara will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 12:00 PM from the Sheldon Funeral Home, 459 Main St., Laceyville, PA 18630, with Reverend Charlie Bishop officiating. Family and friends may call at the Funeral Home on Monday from 11:00 AM until the start of the service. Interment will immediately follow the service and take place at the North Flat Cemetery in Laceyville, PA.
