Obituary

Betty Lou Vaow, of Meshoppen, PA, passed away at her home on Allen St. on Saturday evening, July 10, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Betty Lou had struggled with her health for the last 19 years, and she was a great testament of courage and strength, to her family, her many of friends and countless other members of the community.

Betty Lou was born in Meshoppen, PA, on March 29, 1949, the daughter of the late Almon J. Harvey who passed away in 1989, and Olive E. Dymond Harvey who passed away in 2006. Growing up in Auburn Center, Betty Lou was one of 19 brothers and sisters. She was a graduate of the Elk Lake High School with the class of 1967.

After her graduation from high school, she started working at the Meshoppen Dress Factory for over 12 years. During that time, she married Jack Vaow on September 30, 1972. After her time at the Dress Factory, she began a long career, working at Penn's Best Trucking, in Meshoppen, where she was employed as a Secretary. For over 30 years, Betty Lou was a faithful employee of the Ruark Family. For the last 3 years, she continued her working career with Bill Ruark, working at his WMR Management Company, at Lake Carey, PA.

Betty Lou was a member of the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion Auxiliary, in Black Walnut, PA. Throughout the years, she enjoyed bowling at the Shadowbrook Lanes in Tunkhannock, bowling in many leagues, especially the Sunday Night Mixed League on her family's team, which included her husband, and siblings. She also enjoyed many days spent on the Shadowbrook Golf course, golfing with her family and a member of the Shadowbrook Women's League.

In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards with her family and also participated in many area benefit pitch tournaments throughout the years. She liked to take trips to Mohegan Sun casino. She loved to travel especially the trips to the beach, Atlantic City, and Las Vegas with her family. By far, her favorite was her long awaited trip to Hawaii with her daughter. Most of all Betty Lou loved her time that she got to spend with her family, especially with her husband, and her daughter and best friend, Jaclyn.

In addition to her father, Almon J. Harvey, and mother, Olive E. Dymond Harvey, Betty Lou was preceded in death by; her brothers: Donald Harvey (d. 1947); Harry Harvey (d. 1984); Earl Almon Harvey (d. 2000); William Harvey (d. 2010) and Ralph Harvey (d. 2020); her sisters: Joan Harvey (d. 1962); Connie Sherwood (d. 2007); Shirley Hallock (d. 2008); Alberta Belcher (d. 2012); Charlotte Hunter (d. 2013); Lena Faye Oakes (d. 2014); and Sharon Harvey (d. 2014).

Betty Lou is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jack Vaow of Meshoppen, PA and her daughter, Jaclyn Vaow, also of Meshoppen, PA. Her brothers: James Harvey (Phyllis) of Brookville, PA; Albert Harvey (Allison) of Harvey's Lake, PA; and Selim Harvey (Sandy) of Dallas, PA; and sisters: Anna Wandell of Durhamville, NY; Donna Shoemaker of Mehoopany, PA; and Judy Harvey of Centermoreland, PA; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Service for Betty Lou will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at 11:00 AM from the Sheldon Funeral Home, 8206 SR6 Meshoppen PA with Reverend Gary Myers of the Meshoppen Biblical Baptist Church officiating.  Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, July 16, 2021 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM, and on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.  Interment will be at the convenience of her family at a later date.
