Mrs. Betty R. Winslow Salsman, age 86, of Spring Hill Rd. Wyalusing, PA , passed away peacefully in her home on Spring Hill, Sunday morning, September 10, 2017, with her caregiver, Shanna Woodruff, her youngest son, Robin, and his partner, Bobbi , there to comfort her.
Betty was born on October 9, 1931, the youngest child of Earnest and Ina Mae Howland Winslow, in the family home in Herrickville, PA.
While in high school, her friend that would become her sister in law, Reatha Salsman, introduced Betty to her brother, Romaine Salsman. That introduction turned into a wedding on March 6, 1949, a marriage lasting 66 years. Romaine Salsman passed away on November 30, 2015.
Betty was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Her life revolved around her family and also included her Spring Hill neighbors. Raising six children, she was "Aunt Betty" to many more, who loved her very much. In her spare time she loved to spend time in her flower garden, loved to cook and bake, being well known for her "Best Apple Pies Around". Working for many years, she was a seamstress at many dress factories, including, Stevensville, Camptown, Wyalusing, Black Walnut, Standing Stone, and retired in 1996 from the dress factory in Meshoppen. While working, she was a member of the, I L G W U, Dress Factory Union.
Surviving are her six children, James Salsman (Teralin Aker), of Camptown, PA; Roy (Sandy) Salsman, of Hagertown, NM; Diana (Joseph) Fuller, of Kingsley, PA; Ruth Wannamaker, of Belleview, FL; Romaine "Bromo" (Tammy) Salsman, of Milan, PA; Robin "Scruffy" Salsman (Bobbi Brotzman), of Spring Hill, PA; also 29 Grandchildren; 48 Great-Grandchildren; and 7 Great-Great-Grandchildren. Betty is also survived by a brother, Bernard Winslow, of East Smithfield, PA; her extended family of brothers in law, Richard (Darlene) Salsman of Meshoppen, PA; Jeffrey (Norneen) Salsman, of Golden Hill, PA; sisters in law, Reatha Robinson, of Golden Hill, PA; Marlene Rodriguez, of Silvara, PA; Linda Brown, of Golden Hill, PA; and Joanne Salsman, of Golden Hill, PA; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her father in law and mother in law, Howard and Vera Salsman; a sister, Gertrude Purcell Howland; a brother and sister in law, Robert and Joni Faye Winslow; sister in law, Gladys Winslow; sister and brother in law, Genevieve and Earl Wintermute; grandsons, Cory Salsman and Roy Salsman Jr.; granddaughter, Carol Ann Salsman; great-grandson, Romaine Lyle Salsman Jr.; great-granddaughter, Angel Raye Chilson; son in law, Bud Wannamaker, and seven brothers in law.
Memorial services for Betty will be held on Monday, September 18 , 2017 at 12:00 PM at Sheldon Funeral Homes, Main Street, Laceyville, PA with her nephew Pastor John Lattimer of Faith Baptist Church, Canton, PA officiating. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial contributions, to the Betty and Romaine Salsman GED Scholarship Fund, C/O Community Bank, 406 Main St., Laceyville, PA 18623. This memorial fund is to be set up to help members of the community who need help to receive their GED.
