Daniel Grant Newman, age 78, of Chesapeake City, MD passed away Friday, September 15, 2017. Daniel was born on May 2, 1939, the son of the late Malcolm John Newman (d. May 24, 1973) and Bernetta Salsman Newman (d. May 27, 2003) of Laceyville, PA.


He graduated from Wyalusing Valley High School with the class of 1958. He was President of the Class and instrumental in establishing a scholarship in honor of that class. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Mansfield University, a Master's Degree in Counseling as well as a Doctorate in Educational Administration.


Directly out of high school, Daniel was drafted by the Atlanta Braves Organization, then based in Milwaukee, and played eight years of professional baseball. He served in the United States Marine Corps and received the Dress Blue Award for his platoon. He retired from the military as a Lieutenant Colonel after 30 years of service with the Delaware Army National Guard. In 2005, Daniel was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Luzerne County Chapter.

For nearly five decades, Daniel helped to shape the character of young people as an educator, an administrator, a nationally certified counselor, a football, basketball and baseball coach, as well as serving as a private instructor in baseball/softball skills. The last 30 years of his educational career, he was a counselor at Elkton High School and Cecil County Vocational School in Maryland. During that time, he served on many committees to promote education and community resources.


Daniel is survived by his loving family: wife of 51 years, Deanna Grace Ritchey Newman; daughter and son-in-law, Katharine Dee Newman and Stephen Paul Kremser (Pacific Palisades, CA); son and daughter-in-law, Grant Daniel Newman and Marianne Wan-Hay Chow Newman (New York, NY); grandchildren; Owen Grant Kremser, Olivia Kremser, Vivienne Kremser, and Lila Corinne Kremser (Pacific Palisades). He is also survived by one sister, Delores Jones, and seven nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Newman.


A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, September 29, 2017 at Hicks Home For Funerals, 103 Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921, with a visitation beginning at 6 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Sheldon Funeral Homes, 459 Main Street, Laceyville, PA 18623. Interment will follow at the North Flat Cemetery with a Military Honor Service conducted by the members of Rought Hall American Legion Post #510, Dennis Strong American Legion Post #457, and Endless Mountains V.F.W. Post #3583.
