Donald E. Abrey, age 77, of Wyalusing, PA died at home on March 1, 2018 following a two-year struggle with cancer.
Don had a long and successful career as a community banker. In the 1970's, he moved to the southern tier of New York state where he led a series of savings banks. In 1986, he crossed the border to the northern tier of Pennsylvania to join People's State Bank, where he served as President and Chairman of the Board for 30 years, retiring in 2007. Don brought both his business sense and a sense of humor to his work. He was well regarded throughout the wider banking community, and served on multiple state boards, the American Bankers Association, and the Pennsylvania Bankers Association, where he was Chairman from 2005-06.
Don took pleasure from investing time and energy in his community. While living in Corning, New York, he was an active member of the Harris Hill Soaring Club, the Rotary Club, and the Baron Steuben Coffee Club. In Wyalusing, he served as school board president and was active on the boards of several local businesses, including Guthrie Hospital and the TW Group of Companies.
Outside of work and community service, Don enjoyed wildlife, farming, and spending time with his family. A private pilot for more than 40 years, Don loved flying small planes all over the country. His family enjoyed spending time together in the Bahamas on a small barrier reef island called Elbow Cay.
Don was born in Rochester, New York on February 3, 1941 to Florence (née Krauter) and George Abrey. He was the eldest of four siblings and was pre-deceased by his sister Joan Marie. He is survived by a sister, Carol Lee of Eureka, California and a brother, Thomas Abrey of Rochester, New York.
Don is also survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan (née Ranker) and three daughters: Lauren Abrey, MD of Basel, Switzerland, Caryn Abrey, PhD of Seattle, Washington, and Kate Abrey of Arlington, Virginia; his sons-in-law Stephen Oliver and Ashley Gum; and three grandchildren: Abrey and Olivia Oliver and Finn Wittouck.
St. Mary's of the Assumption Church will hold a funeral mass in Don's memory in on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 11:00 with Father Joseph Manarchuck officiating. Don's family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 from 9:00-10:30 AM at the Sheldon Funeral Home, 155 Church St., Wyalusing, PA. His family will host a festive memorial later in the month to celebrate Don with laughter, stories, and friendship.
