Obituary

Donald C. Cunningham of Spring Hill Road, Laceyville, passed away on January 2, 2017 at the age of 91.

Born in North Flat, Laceyville on June 1, 1925, he was the son of the late Lewis Ula and Ethel Canfield Cunningham. He was a graduate of Laceyville High School, Class of 1943. He enlisted in the Army in June of 1943, training at Fort Bliss, TX. He held the rank of Technician Fifth Class as a fuse setter on a 90mm anti-aircraft gun in the European Theater during WWII.

After his discharge in February 1946, he married the former Thelma Brotzman on September 13, 1946. He referred to her as a very precious wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and a wonderful helpmate and lover. His grandkids were told they were on a permanent honeymoon.

He was a farmer for fourteen years until stricken with farmer's lung, and then worked for Whipple's Lumber as a fork-lift operator and yard foreman until retirement.

Don was an active member of Braintrim Baptist Church serving as trustee, deacon, Sunday School teacher, usher, and missionary committee. He would share his faith with anyone; that he was a sinner saved by grace through the blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ – that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and yet by believing and simple faith, one could have eternal life. His favorite verses that backed his faith were John 3:16 and 18, Romans 10:9, Acts 4:12 and Revelation 21:14 and 15. As his friend Dick Iseminger writes in his column, "trust and believe", "It's In The Book."

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Donald and Mary Ann Cunningham of Montrose; Faye and Mike Hammond of Sanford, NC; Dennis and Chanda Cunningham of Laceyville; Joyce and Steve Sherman of New Albany; Kay and Scott Markel of Centereach, NY and Amy Cunningham of Bloomsburg.

Also nine grandchildren: Lt. Jim and Dr. Carolyn Lacey of Walnut Creek, CA; Nathan and Crystal Lacey of Sanford, N.C.; Dr. Courtney Cunningham of Tunkhannock; Gary and Kathryn Sherman of Springfield, OR; Donnie Cunningham of Montrose; Lydia and Scott Walrath of Milan; Ethan Sherman of Kansas City, KS; Dana and Billy Marshall of Mechanicsburg; and Ryan Markel of Centereach, NY. As well as nine great-grandchildren: Kate, Abby, and Andy Lacey of Sanford, NC; Jake and TJ Lacey of Walnut Creek, CA; Caleb Sherman of Springfield, OR; Ella and Tinley Walrath of Milan; and Jonathan Kopenhaver of Mechanicsburg; and a sister, Doris Brown Gonzeles of Niagara Falls.

Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by a son, Glenn Earl in 1966; a son-in-law, James Lacey in 2000, brothers Roy and Lester; sisters Ruth and Edith.
