Obituary

Dorothy F. Ayers (92) of Melbourne, FL passed away on April 4th, 2026. She was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1933, the daughter of Margaret and John Carter of Brooklyn, NY and had one sister, Catherine Long of East Meadow, NY who predeceased her in 1989. After graduating from Grover Cleveland High School in Brooklyn, she worked for AT&T in New York City. In 1953, she married William Mahoney of Laceyville, PA. They were married for 26 years and they had five children.

Dorothy spent many years as a homemaker in Laceyville before going to work at Procter & Gamble in Mehoopany, where she worked for 13 years. Her ex-husband, William, died in 1992. In 1981 she married James T. Oliver Ayers of Tunkhannock, Pa. and they were happily married for 42 years. They lived in Mehoopany, Pa. before moving to Melbourne, FL in 1995, where she worked in a Catholic thrift store for 30 years.

Dorothy enjoyed helping others and those in need. She was famously thrifty and would save things for years because she knew, someday, someone would need it. By doing so, she was able to provide many things for her family when someone was in need.

Dorothy enjoyed reading and playing games and was known for her competitive spirit. She wasn’t going to let anyone win – you had to beat her. She used many unique nicknames and phrases, which we will never forget.

She was predeceased by her son, Michael Mahoney, in 1999 and her granddaughter, Christina Lacey, in 2026. Her surviving children are Debra Bowen of Melbourne, FL Karen Mitchell (Kevin) of Springville, PA, Linda Mahoney of Laceyville, PA and Kevin Mahoney (Irene) of Randolph, NJ. She is survived by 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

A Mass is being held at the Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne, FL. on April 28th. A Memorial Visitation for Dorothy will be held at the Sheldon Funeral Home 459 Main St., Laceyville, PA on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM. Interment will take place at the St. Anthony Cemetery in Stowell, PA.

Dorothy will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
