Dorothy E. Purdy, age 88, of South Auburn, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the Scranton Regional Hospital in Scranton, PA.
Dorothy was born in Montrose, PA on August 12, 1927 the daughter of the late Orville H. and Elsie Cole Arnold. She graduated from Montrose High School with the Class of 1945 and attended East Stroudsburg University for 2 years following her high school graduation. Dorothy was married to Eugene T. Purdy, who passed away on December 5, 2009. She worked as a security guard for Proctor and Gamble Paper and for the Elk Lake School District in the cafeteria. She loved to knit and she would make hats for the homeless. Dorothy also enjoyed making quilts for the South Auburn Crazy Quilts Club.
Dorothy is survived by her sons Thomas G. Purdy of South Auburn; Keith A. and Annette Purdy of Vestal, NY; Blair H. and Janet Purdy of South Auburn; daughters Melinda Gene and John Piccotti of Transue, PA; Terry L. and Chris Arena of South Auburn; Gwen E. and Glen Wilcox of Tunkhannock, PA; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents Dorothy was preceded in death by her daughter Cindy L. Sweeting; brother William Arnold; brother Ralph Arnold; brother George Arnold; sister Beatrice Vlasca; and sister Louise LaRue.
A memorial service for Dorothy will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Laceyville, PA with Reverend Spencer Sweeting and Reverend Raymond D. Purdy officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 9 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be held at the Harmony Hill Cemetery.
