Obituary

Elston Alden Mowry, Clapper Hill, (Laceyville), PA, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday morning on April 1, 2017 as he was welcomed into the arms of our Lord & Savior. He was the husband of Eleanore Lott Mowry, and they were married for 66 years.

Elston was born on March 14, 1927, in South Auburn, PA and he recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Elston was the son of the late Vera E. (Tewksbury), who passed away on January 26, 1986 and Rex W. Mowry, who passed away on January 26, 1975. He was one of six brothers and one sister.

Elston and Eleanore were married on August 26, 1950, and in 2010, they were presented by State Representative Tina Pickett with the House of Representatives Citation in recognition of their 60th anniversary. They have three children, Barbara Barbacci of Tunkhannock, PA, John Mowry of Clapper Hill (Laceyville), PA, and Annette & Joe Mileto of Williamsport, PA.

The couple moved to Clapper Hill in November, 1951, where they began their life-time on the dairy farm. He continued farming with his dairy cows on Clapper Hill until 1990 and then with beef cattle until 2010.

Elston attended grade school in South Auburn, Auburn Center, and Meshoppen High School. He spent most of his early life on the family farm in South Auburn.

Elston left school as a Senior at Meshoppen High School in March, 1945, to enlist in the Navy. He served on the USS Macon as a Seaman 2nd class, and he returned home in 1947, after Japan surrendered. In honor of his service to his country, Elston is recognized with a granite paver brick in the Bradford County Veterans Memorial Park in Towanda, PA. He received his diploma after he served his country.

Elston was someone who was so giving of his time to others. He was a Chairman of the Local Agway in Laceyville and a delegate to Dairymen's League. He was a member of Rought Hall Post 510 American Legion in Black Walnut, PA. Elston was a member of South Auburn Grange for 69 years in which he served as Master for two terms. Elston loved music so much and was a lifetime member of the Endless Mountain Barbershop Chorus for 33 years. In 2012, he was presented with the first Barbershopper of the Year Award, and in his honor, this award is presented each year to a member of the chorus. Elston was a member of the Silvara United Methodist Church and was a dedicated Sunday School teacher and soloist at church. In May, 2012, Elston was presented with the Don James Lighthouse Award, given to an individual in the area who represents fine character and a giving heart and who has served his country and his faith.

Elston is survived by brothers Paul Mowry and wife Ernestine of Bloomsburg, PA, George Mowry and wife Patricia of Meshoppen, PA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Brittany Barbacci, Christopher Barbacci, Jonathan Mowry, Kelly & Shane Conrad, Tara Mowry, Marissa Mowry, Alden Mileto, Simone Mileto, and Gabriella Mileto; great-grandchildren Skylar, Wyatt, Harrison, Charlee, and Adaleigh; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his great-grandson Sawyer Conrad (d. April 19. 2013), and his siblings Kenneth Mowry (d. June 14, 1999), Rev. Duane Mowry (d. November 1, 1994), Ronald Mowry (d. July 13, 2016), and Eloise Mowry (d. January 2, 1968).

Funeral services for Elston will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 10:30 AM from the Sheldon Funeral Home, 8212 SR 6, Meshoppen, PA with Chaplin Richard Davis of the Guthrie Hospice officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the members of the Rought Hall Post 510 American Legion, Dennis Strong Post 457 American Legion, and Endless Mountains Post 3583 V.F.W. Interment will follow at the Jersey Hill Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home in Meshoppen on Wednesday evening, April 5, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 PM.
