Ethel M. Wood Miller Ashley, 93 of Wyalusing, PA passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the Robert Packer Hospital surrounded by her family.
Ethel was born on April 14, 1924 in Bentley Creek, PA the only child of the late Asa A. and Carrie Lewis Wood.
In 1942, Ethel graduated from Wellsburg, NY High School and thereafter began working at Remington Rand making components for Norden bomb sites while caring for her ailing parents. Her work there was instrumental in the success of WWII. She was honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the war effort in support of her country. She later owned and operated a successful business in Wyalusing, The Ideal Lodge for 37 years while raising her two sons. She was a dedicated, loving and caring mother and grandmother. In addition to her family and business, her passion for playing bingo and love for her pet cat were the highlight of her life. She was a 60 plus year member of the Grange Hall in the Bentley Creek area.
Ethel was predeceased by her parents, her first husband Deroy Vernon Miller (d. September 1976), her second husband Herman Eugene "Pat" Ashley (d. July 1964) and by an infant daughter Joanna Elaine Miller.
She is survived by sons Daryl Miller, Sr. and his wife Kay of Wyalusing and Bruce Ashley of Wyalusing; grandchildren Daryl Miller, Jr., Kristopher Miller, Amy Merritt and her husband Dan, Robert Miller, LeighAnn Miller, Spirit Ashley, Michael Wilson and his wife Renee, and Matthew Wilson and his wife Hannah,; as well as numerous great grandchildren.
A funeral service for Ethel will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 3:00 PM from the Sheldon Funeral Home, 155 Church Street, Wyalusing, PA with Pastor John McAndrew of the Calvary Chapel officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 from 2:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Lowman, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ethel's name to the Wyalusing Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 86, Wyalusing, PA 18853 or the Animal Care Sanctuary, 353 Sanctuary Hill Lane, East Smithfield, PA 18817.
