January 21, 1946 – August 24, 2018
George Leroy Laird, age 72, of SR 3004, Montrose, PA (Retta), passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the Community Medical Center, in Scranton, PA, on Friday, August 24, 2018.
George was born in West Wyoming, PA, on January 21, 1946, the son of the late Eleanor C. Crosby Frantz Laird, who passed away on October 21, 2005, and the late Weston Frantz, who passed away in 1950; and the late Norman A. Laird, who passed away on July 28, 1982. Growing up near Laceyville, PA, George was a graduate of the Wyalusing High School, with the class of 1963.
On September 18, 1965, George married the former Bonnie Underwood, and have been together for the last 52 years. For many years, he was a dairy farmer in Retta, PA. After retiring from farming, George was employed by Roy Piper Construction, in Tunkhannock, PA; WEMCO, in Lawton, PA; he also enjoyed being a valet, at the Mohegan Sun Casino, a server at Split Rock Lodge in the Pocono's; and was currently a dealer at the Tioga Downs Casino in Nichols, NY. Throughout the summer, George loved working with his long-time friends with the Nice's Potato Pancakes, at the Harford Fair, Bloomsburg Fair, Wyoming Co. Community Fair, and the Back Mountain Library Auction.
George was a member of the Franklin Lodge #263 F&AM, in Laceyville, PA, serving his lodge as it's Master in 1995 and 2010, he was currently serving as the lodge's treasurer. For many years, George conducted many Masonic Funeral Services for Franklin Lodge's deceased members. He was also a member of the Rush Volunteer Fire Co., in Lawton, PA, conducting many Texas Hold-em tournaments, and Elimination Party's. In his younger years, he loved waterskiing, and bowling, and recently spending many nights playing cards, golfing, and many hours baking his special pies, for his neighbors and friends, and mowing his lawn, and expanding his lawn with every mowing. Most of all, George loved spending time his family, and his many friends, taking great pride making everyone laugh, and was known by many as being the "Life of the Party".
Surviving is his wife of 52 years, the former Bonnie Underwood Laird, his children: Tammy and her husband Mike Goodwin, of Tunkhannock, PA; Todd and his wife Esther Laird of Las Vegas, NV; and Tina Salsman, of Wyalusing, PA, and his seven grandchildren, Nathan (Kate) Goodwin, of Clarks Green, PA; Brandon Holzlein, of Laceyville, PA; Ryan Goodwin of Newtown, CT; David (Shala) Cornelius, of Meshoppen, PA; Emily Cornelius, of Meshoppen, PA; Molly Goodwin, of Tunkhannock, PA; and Jacob Laird, of Las Vegas, NV, also his 5 great-grandchildren, Kaydance Holzlein, of Meshoppen, PA; Sophia Kelly, of Meshoppen, PA; Ryder Holzlein, of Meshoppen, PA; Avery Goodwin, of Clarks Green, PA; and Macey Cornelius, of Meshoppen, PA. His two brothers, Gerald (Betty) Laird, of Temecula, CA; Robert (Anna) Laird, of Meshoppen, PA; and his sister Mildred Golden, of Barto, FL, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Frantz, and Charles Frantz.
Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, August 31, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Jersey Hill Community Church, with Rev. Tim Barnett of the New Hope Ministries in West Auburn officiating. Interment will be in the Retta Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, PA on Thursday evening August 30, 2018, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Masonic Services will be conducted by the membership of the Franklin Lodge # 263 F&AM, on Thursday evening at 7:45 PM.
