Obituary

Mr. George Surplus, age 67, of Detrick Rd., Sugar Run, PA passed away unexpectedly at the Memorial Hospital in Towanda, PA on Thursday, February 12, 2015.

George was born in Scranton, PA on January 5, 1948, the son of the late Lemule and Ruth Strausser Surplus.

George served his country as a member of the US Army, during the Vietnam Conflict, where he served in Korea. He was a member of the Wyalusing American Legion Post # 534.

For many years, George was employed as a log truck driver for Donny Baker Logging, of Wyalusing, PA, retiring in 2012. After his retirement he worked a short time for Burgess Construction, in Wyalusing, as a dump truck driver.

Throughout his life he loved being surrounded by his family and many friends. George loved to hunt in his younger years, but his favorite outdoors activity was fishing. He spent many hours fishing the Susquehanna River, and also made trips to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, deep sea fishing. In his later years, he enjoyed the time that he got to spend with his grandchildren.

Surviving is his long time companion, Patricia Manning Gruver, of Sugar Run, PA, his son and his wife, Joe and Hope Gruver Sr., of Laceyville, PA; and his daughter in law, Karen Gruver, of Silvara, PA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Hannah Kiefer and her fiancé Matt Wilson, of Laceyville, PA; Samantha Gruver (Brandon Bonavita), of Meshoppen, PA; Joey Gruver Jr., of Laceyville, PA; Haylee Gruver, of Silvara, PA; Damian Manning, of Laceyville, PA; and Christina Grimes, of Stantonsburg, NC; and his great-grandchildren, Amber; Eli; Gunner; and Bow. George is also survived by his brother and his wife, Ronald and Maria Surplus, of Avoca, PA, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Gruver in 2012, and a grandson, Dillan Gruver in 1991.

Military Honor Services will be held on Saturday afternoon, February 21, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the Wyalusing American Legion Post # 534, Bowling Alley Rd., Wyalusing, PA, conducted by the members of the Wyalusing American Legion Post # 534, with a memorial luncheon to be served at the Wyalusing American Legion immedediatly following. Internment will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, PA.
