Gertrude "Trudi" E. Caines, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, in New Albany, PA, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 30, 1947, in Meshoppen, PA, Trudi led a life characterized by kindness, compassion, and an unwavering willingness to help others.
Trudi's career was as varied and vibrant as her personality. She began her professional journey as a bartender and waitress at the Windy Mill, where her warm spirit and engaging demeanor endeared her to countless patrons. She then took on the role of a dispatcher for Taylor Packing in Wyalusing, PA, and later became a manager for Hallmark Transportation. Her dedication and exceptional skills in customer service culminated in her long tenure at Blue Ridge Communications, from which she eventually retired. Trudi had a remarkable talent for driving and could pretty much drive the wheels off of anything! She made sure you knew that.
Trudi graduated from Elk Lake High School in 1965. It was her commitment to her family and community that truly defined her legacy. She found joy in her grandchildren and cherished moments spent with them, “Grandma night” sleepovers were a big deal! Her special pancakes in the morning were the best. Many evenings were enjoyed sitting on the porch, sipping a glass of wine with her dear neighbor, Jennie Hallock, while appreciating the wildlife living in the country.
Trudi's friendships were deep and meaningful. She shared a profound bond with her best friend, Sharon Carter, whom her family referred to as her "sister from another mother." Their sisterly connection served as a testament to Trudi's generous heart.
Her family, who will carry her spirit forward, includes her daughter Laura Manahan and her husband Scott of New Albany, PA; and her sons Victor Caines (Michelle) of Meshoppen, PA, and Thomas Caines, Jr. (Lisa) of Tunkhannock, PA. Trudi was also a proud grandmother to six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her brothers, John Taluba and Ronald Taluba, both of Laceyville, PA, as well as her brother-in-law, Dave Bell of Tunkhannock, PA.
Trudi was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent (d. June 23, 2007) and Thelma Taluba (d. Aug. 21, 2018), her sister, Frances Bell (d. June 14, 2022), and was welcomed into Heaven by two infant great-grandchildren, Baby Paisley Zickler and Madlyn Fletcher.
A memorial service for Trudi will be at the Sheldon Funeral Home, 459 Main St, Laceyville, PA 18623 on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at 7:00 PM and officiated by Deacon Raymond Pieretti of St. Joachims Church. A visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5:00 PM until the time of service.
In her passing, Trudi leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and joy. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. May her memory be a blessing.
