Obit for Gladys Merritt age 82
Mrs. Gladys Merritt, age 82, of Laceyville, PA. passed away at her home, in Tuscarora twp., Bradford Co., on Thursday May 30,2013 after a long battle with cancer.
Gladys was born on Nov 14, 1930, in Terrytown, PA., the daughter of the late Esmond and Dellephene Vanderpool Johnson. She lived most of her life in the Terrytown–Wyalusing area. She married Walter (Jack) Merritt on Jan. 19, 1951. They were married for 44 years, before his passing in March of 1995.
In her spare time, Gladys loved embroidering, crocheting, growing her own roses, and most of all spending time with her family.
Gladys is survived by her children, Walter and Diane Merritt, of Terrytown, PA.; Patty Strawser, of Monroeton, PA.; Gary Merritt, of Rome, PA.; Susan and Paul Brown, of Laceyville, PA.; Betty and Ambrose Bailey Jr., of Towanda, PA.; Joseph Merritt, of Wilmington, Ohio; and Kelly and Arthur Manning Jr., of Laceyville, PA., 31 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her three sisters, Virgina Johnson; Bernitta Wright; and Bernetta Ellis, all of Athens, PA. and many nieces and nephews. Gladys is also survived by a very close friend, Jamie Thompson, of Laceyville, PA. and his three sons, Jeff Thompson; David Thompson; and William Thompson.
Besides her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Lee Merritt in 2010; a son, Ronald David Merritt in 1957 and a daughter, Kathleen Ellen Merritt in 1956; a son in law, Fred Strawser, also 5 brothers, Cecil; Carl; Esmond Jr.; Alfred; and Sherman, and 5 sisters, Louise; Beatrice; Hazel; Arlene; and Evelyn.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013 at 4:00 PM from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, PA. with Pastor Bill Klees of the Monroeton Community Alliance Church officiating, Interment will be in the Terrytown Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home, on Monday from 2:00 PM until the time of the service.
