H.Dean Balcomb, age 89, passed away early Saturday morning, September 27, 2014 at his home in Stevensville, PA.
He was born July 21st, 1925 in Forty-Fort, PA, the son of the late Charlotte and Ernest Balcomb. Upon graduation from Forty-Fort HS in 1943, he spent 4 years in the U.S. Navy serving his country on an aircraft carrier in the European and Pacific theaters of WWII. His working career began with Commonwealth Telephone where he was a telephone lineman. Later, he became a draftsman with Modern Design Corp. in Vestal, NY, and his final place of employment was Wyalusing School District in the capacity of Business Administrator.
One of his varied interests in life was music. Many hours were spent directing the Irem Temple String Band and "Deano's Band". The latter played for many local nursing homes, hospitals, and community functions. In addition, he was an animal lover, woodworker, hunter, and fisherman.
Dean was a Past Master of the LeRaysville Masonic Lodge, as well as being a member of the Scottish Rite and Shriners. He also belonged to the Beaver Meadows Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife Sara (Achenbach) of 67 years, daughter Sheryl Balcomb of Stevensville, PA daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Andy Wert of Mifflintown, PA and several nieces and nephews. He leaves four very special caregivers, Sheila McGavin, Debbie Borden, Ashley McGavin, and Maureen Kelly, as well as his faithful dog, Midge. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister and brother in-law, Harriet and Bill Christmas.
