Obituary

Harold Elston Carter, age 86, of Rome, PA entered peacefully into eternal life on Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026 at the Gracious Living Estates in Montrose, PA surrounded by his family.

Born on September 25, 1939 in West Auburn, PA, he was the son of the late F. Elston Carter (d. Dec. 19, 1980) and Ruth A. Jones Carter (d. April 11, 2011). Harold attended and graduated from Meshoppen High School with the class of 1957.

Harold married Charlotte Jean Brenchley (d. October 14, 2024) on May 7, 1960 and they enjoyed 64+ years of wedded bliss. Harold was a Subway Franchisee in High Springs FL from 1996-2006. He was the Owner/Manager of Endless Mountains Hatchery, Inc in Auburn Center, PA for 19 years and prior to that a technician for Sire Power.

Harold was a member of the Meshoppen Community Church, a member of the Franklin Lodge #263 F&AM, past Secretary; past member of the South Auburn Grange, past member of the Elk Lake High School Booster Club, past President. He was one of the Founders and President of the Sus/Wyco Squidget Baseball League.

Harold loved coaching and mentoring kids through youth baseball. He coached Squidgets, Little League, and Teeners for Auburn Center through the years. He was an enthusiastic sports fan and loved the Phillies and the Eagles. He enjoyed attending Penn State football games and cheering on the Nittany Lions! During his time in Florida, he enjoyed attending the University of Florida football and basketball games with Charlotte and his siblings.

Harold had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed many hunting adventures across North America with his son, Elston. He also had lots of local hunting adventures with family and friends in the “Hollow”. For many years he enjoyed annual fishing trips to Canada with lifelong friends. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed golfing.

Faith and family were always a priority and he and Charlotte enjoyed many Sunday dinners after church with his daughter, Jana and his son-in-law, Lou. In recent years, he enjoyed traveling to NH to spend holidays with his granddaughter, Allie, and to attend her dance recitals, gymnastics and cheer competitions.

Harold is survived by his children, Jana Lyn Verry and her husband, Louis of Meshoppen, PA and H. Elston Carter and his wife, Linda of Pelham, NH; his granddaughter, Alexandra Carter of Pelham, NH; his sister, Sharon M. Carter and her husband, Peter Brusamonti of Dushore, PA, his brother Lewis J. Carter of Sebring, FL and his nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lester Orell Carter and E. Dale “Rip” Carter and sister, Dr. Esther A. Yoder.

The Funeral Service for Harold will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at 6:00 PM at the Meshoppen Community Church, 128 Church Street, Meshoppen, PA with Reverend Thomas Mott officiating. The service will begin with a Masonic service. Family and friends may call at the church on August 19, 2026 from 3:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be held Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Jersey Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harold’s name to the Meshoppen Community Church, 128 Church St., Meshoppen, PA 18630.
