Harold Elston Holdren, age 89, of Lansdale, PA (formerly of Bensalem, PA and Laceyville, PA) passed away Saturday afternoon, June 8, 2013 at the Gwynedd Square Nursing Home in Lansdale, PA where he had been residing for the last two years.
He was born on October 8, 1923 in Laceyville, PA the son of the late Burr and Helen Dietrich Holdren.
Harold grew up in Laceyville, PA and graduated from the Laceyville High School class of 1941. After high school he served his country in the US Army during World War II as a Rifleman and marched across Central Europe including Rhineland.
He was a heavy equipment operator as a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He worked for Harry Erb Contractors building roads in Northeastern Pennsylvania. He then moved to Bensalem, PA where he worked for Cleveland Wrecking Company.
After he moved to Bensalem, Harold met his wife of 47 years, Betty L. (McCoy) Holdren who passed away on February 2, 2005.
He was a member of the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and tried his hand at golf in his later years. He was very proud of the house he built from the ground up in Bensalem. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family.
Harold is survived by his sons Donald H. Holdren and his wife Barbara of Holland, PA and W. Douglas Holdren and his wife Marcia of Collegeville, PA; his daughter Lavon of Binghamton, NY; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his sisters Lolita Jayne and her husband Tom of Floral City, FL, Beryle Ciprich of Laceyville, PA, Bonnie Jayne and her husband Ralph of Laceyville, PA; his sister-in-law Doris Holdren Preston of Laceyville, PA; as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his step mother Daisy Miller Holdren, his brother Robert Holdren, his sister Norma Holdren Storck Harrington, and his brother-in-law George Ciprich.
Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, June 14, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church with Rev. Dolly Tarreto of the church officiating. Interment will follow at the Lacey St. Cemetery in Laceyville, PA with graveside military services conducted by the members of Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion of Black Walnut, PA, the Dennis Strong Post #457 American Legion of Tunkhannock, PA and the Endless Mountains Post# 3583 V.F.W. of Mehoopany, PA. Family and friends are invited to call at the church on Friday, June 14, 2013 from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, PA 570-869-1232.
