Hedwig "Hedy" N. Chaffee, age 79, passed away quietly at her home after a long battle with cancer. As Hedy put it "I won because I was supposed to be gone three years ago". Hedy and her husband, Stewart, of 60 years, moved from Delaware County, PA, to Tuscarora Township in 1976. Hedy retired from the DuPont Experimental Station, where she worked for 20 years. While at DuPont, she was instrumental in the discovery and development of Kevlar.
Before moving to Silvara, Hedy was an avid athlete competing in tennis; basketball; softball and golf. She was also a nationally ranked archer.
Community service was Hedy's true passion which she sprinkled throughout the region with involvement in Silvara's Ladies Aide; Laceyville's Oldest House; Ponytails softball; and Tuscarora Township Auditor. She also served as the PA State Grange Lecturer, for which she was awarded National Lecturer of the Year on two occasions.
The love of genealogy and history led Hedy to be a founding member of the Tuscarora Township Historical Society. She spent 33 years researching and preserving historical documents for the region. On September 2nd. the township dedicated the new TTHS building in her honor, for her years of volunteer work.
Services celebrating Hedy's life will be held on Tuesday September 15, 2015, at the Sheldon Funeral Home, 155 Church St., Wyalusing, PA, at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Charles Bishop, of the Retta Community Church officiating.
