Helen Marie Goodwin Newhart, age 92, of Laceyville, PA passed away Sunday, February 1, 2015 surrounded by her loving family at the Golden Living Center in Tunkhannock, PA.
She was born on November 12, 1922 in Elmira, NY. She was the daughter of the late Charles Goodwin and Leslie and Gladys Harris.
She was a 1942 graduate of Laceyville High School. Helen married her husband, Frank Newhart, on August 8, 1942.
Helen was a stay at home mother who lovingly raised her eight children (four boys and four girls). Through the years she was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors when they were in need. Once the youngest child was out of the house, she went to work at Proctor & Gamble and remained there until her retirement. Helen enjoyed cooking for her family, BINGO, and knitting slippers, which were a favorite gift to her family members.
The last two years she had lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Virginia and was an active member of the Heritage Baptist Church of Chesterfield, VA.
Helen is survived by her children and spouses Barbara and John Caprioli of Cresco, PA, Judy and Carlton Meeks of North Chesterfield, VA, Frank and Sharon Newhart of Dunnellon, FL, Dennis and Maria Newhart of Tunkhannock, PA, John and Joan Newhart of Tunkhannock, PA, Max and Joe Bendock of Wyalusing, PA, Ike and Liria Newhart of Port Saint Lucie, FL, and Kelly Stephens of Meshoppen, PA; 31 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, all of which she made feel like they were her favorite. She is also survived by her brother Jessie and Millie Goodwin of Laceyville, PA and sister Hetti Tinna of Sugar Run, PA. Besides her parents Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Frank Newhart (September 26, 2011), an infant daughter, Gladys Newhart, a son-in-law, Francis Whiter and her sisters, Margaret Honeywell and Gertrude Pennay.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 6:00 PM from the Sheldon Funeral Homes, 155 Church St., Wyalusing, PA with Reverend Gary Myers of the Meshoppen Biblical Baptist Church officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be held a later date at the convenience of the family at the Jersey Hill Cemetery.
Helen's family would like to extend their most sincere thanks to the Golden Living Center in Tunkannock, PA and the dedicated staff members who cared for Helen through her last weeks. Their attentiveness, compassion, and loving care made Helen's last days as comfortable as possible.
