Herbert "Herbie" F. Cornelius, age 49 of Retta, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at Geisinger Medical Center Hospital in Danville, PA.

He was born on January 7, 1972 in Tunkhannock, PA the son of  Herbert E. Cornelius of Meshoppen, PA and the late Margaret E. Chapman Cornelius (d. March 24, 2019).  He was a graduate of Elk Lake High School.

After graduating, Herbert began working at Meshoppen Stone where he worked for more than 20 years.  For 2 years, he owned and operated several quarries in Laceyville, Meshoppen, and Wyalusing as part of Tri County Stone.  On August 28, 2020, Herbie opened Cornelius Tire & Repair with his son, David, in Laceyville, PA.

When he wasn't working, Herbert enjoyed spending time at his seasonal camp site in Meshoppen, PA, at Slumber Valley campground where his beloved dog, Cleo, was never far from his side.  He also loved Nascar and traveling to Dover to watch his favorite driver in the 19 car, Jeremy Mayfield.  Herbert enjoyed collecting antiques and could often be found attending many of the auctions around the area.  Most of all, he cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren.

Besides his father, Herbie is survived by his wife of 14 years, the former Kendra Culver Cornelius of Retta, who he married on October 7, 2006; his children, David Cornelius (Shala) of Meshoppen, PA, Alexis Schrader of Retta, PA, Emily Cornelius (Corey Jones) of Dalton, PA and Nathan Schrader of Retta, PA; his grandchildren, Sophia Kelly and Macey Cornelius of Meshoppen, PA; his "special parents", Doug and Marilyn Walton of Silvara, PA; his siblings, Deborah Mokris (Steve) of Meshoppen, PA, Steven Cornelius of Meshoppen, PA, Marge Yurkanin (Dave) of Jessup, PA, and Barry Cornelius of Meshoppen, PA; his mother-in-law, Barbara Culver of Laceyville, PA; his brother-in-law, Gary Culver of Springville, PA; his sisters-in-law, Betsy Gacha (Tim) of Meshoppen, PA, Pam Risch (Eric) of Laceyville, PA, Debbie Swenson (Scott) of Tunkhannock, PA, Jessica Culver of Laceyville, PA, and Marissa Culver of Laceyville, PA; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins.

Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by his brothers, David Cornelius (d. July 19, 1992) and Kenneth Cornelius (d. July 19, 1992); and his father-in-law, David G. Culver (d. February 17, 2009).

Funeral services for Herbie will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 12:00 Noon from the Sheldon Funeral Home on 459 Main Street in Laceyville, PA with Lay Minister Vickie Ellis of the Beaver Meadows Church officiating.  Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will be in the Retta Cemetery

Due to the ongoing pandemic, social distancing and masks will be required to be worn while inside of the funeral home.
