Obituary

Howard A. (Bing) Wilson, 84, of Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024, at Claremont Nursing & Rehab, Carlisle, PA, after several years of declining health.  Formerly of Camptown, PA, he was born in Elmira, NY, the fifth of six children of Howard M. Wilson and Emma Ferris Wilson.  He attended Wellsboro and Covington Schools, and was a member of the first graduating class of the consolidated North Penn High School, Blossburg, PA, in 1958.  He was active in school sports and photography of school activities.

In his early years, he assisted his parents with their businesses, including the Covington Coffee Shop and Wilson Upholstery.  He graduated with a Math & Science Degree from Mansfield State College in 1962.  He did graduate study at Bucknell University for several summers.  After teaching Science in the Elmira School District, he became a Math Teacher and Department Head at Wyalusing Valley High School for over 30 years.

In April of 1963, he married Nancy Ruth Watkins at her home church in Blossburg, PA.  They resided briefly in Mansfield, then moved to the Culver Apartment in Camptown.  There they welcomed their first daughter, Denise.  Later, they purchased "the oldest house" in Camptown, partly built by the founder of Camptown, Job Camp, and enjoyed making additions and maintaining its historic ambiance.  Their second daughter, Jennifer, was born, and the house was filled with friends and family activities as they all participated in community and church events.

Howard enjoyed Mens' Club, including barbecuing chicken and being Treasurer of the Camptown Races for many years.  He was a member of the Camptown United Methodist Church and served there in many capacities.  His interests included bowling, modern Western square dancing, deer hunting, RVing, traveling, and antique cars, especially Hudsons.  He also operated Wilson Upholstery and later, an Advertising Specialties Business.

In 2014, Howard and Nancy relocated to Mechanicsburg in southern PA to live closer to their children and grandchildren.  There they were active in the PA Dutch Chapter of the Hudson Club and the Shepherdstown United Methodist Church.  Howard is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, his daughter Denise (Michael) Cox of Harrisburg, and daughter Jennifer (Daniel) Rice of northern VA.  Also there are two sisters-in-law:  Betty Wilson of Mansfield, PA, and Susan (Gary) Greenfield of Mechanicsburg.  Howard especially enjoyed activities and the love of his three grandchildren: Erin Cox (fiancé Blake Jacobs) of Pittsburgh, Daniel "Danny" Rice and Claire C. Rice.  He always enjoyed family reunions and his numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Howard was preceded in death by his beloved parents, aunts and uncles, two brothers, Earl and Mark, and two sisters, Donna Kimball and Patricia Kaminski.

His family will receive visitors at the Sheldon Funeral Home, 155 Church St., Wyalusing, PA, on Thursday, August 15, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.  The funeral service will be at the Camptown Community Church, 5155 Rt. 706, Camptown, at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 16, with visitation one hour before the service.  Officiating will be Rev. Helen Learn and Rev. David Dewing, with Faith Jaynes as organist.  Interment will follow at the Camptown Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Camptown United Methodist Church, Treasurer Bonnie Mader, 4553 Rt. 706, Wyalusing, PA 18853, or to the charity of one's choice.
