Obituary

Jesse B. Goodwin, age 92, of Laceyville, PA, known as "Jake" to his friends and loved ones, passed from this earth on Wednesday morning, July 17, 2019 at the Skilled Nursing Unit at Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Jake was born in Luzerne, PA, on July 28, 1926, the son of the late Gladys (Taylor) and Leslie Harris.  He served his country in the US Army during WWII with the 340 th Engineer Construction Battalion in the Philippines.

He was a dairy farmer with Donald Arthur at his farm, The Braintrim Farm, for many years.  He was also employed with Taylor Packing as a security guard.

He was a member of the Rought Hall American Legion Post #510.  He enjoyed woodworking, woodburning, tinkering, and the outdoors.  He took great pleasure in working with tractors, mowing his yard, and tending the garden.  Most of all he enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his family.

Jake married Millie Jo Pennay on August 16, 1947.  They were married for 70 years before her passing on February 15, 2018, and raised a family of six.  Their children are as follows:  Bonnie (James) Manahan of Warrenton, VA; Gary (Kathie) Goodwin of East Smithfield, PA; Mark (Barbara) Goodwin of Gloucester, VA; Teri (Jim) Burgess of Dillsburg, PA; Tim (Dianna) Goodwin of Wyalusing, PA; and Todd (Lynelle) Goodwin of Wyalusing, PA.

He is also survived by his 25 grandchildren (including spouses) and 26 great-grandchildren with another 3 on the way; his brother-in-law, Harold Pennay of Silvara, PA; as well as many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his sisters, Margaret Honeywell, Helen Newhart, Gertrude Pennay and Hettie Tinna.

A memorial service for Jake will be held on Monday, July 22, 2019, at 2:00 PM at the Sheldon Funeral Home, 459 Main Street, Laceyville, PA, with Reverend Lloyd Vaughn of the Independent Baptist Church, Towanda, PA, officiating. Interment will follow at the Lacey Street Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the members of the Rought Hall American Legion Post #510, the Dennis Strong American Legion Post #457, and the Endless Mountains V.F.W. Post #3583.  Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 12:00 PM until the time of the service.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the entire staff at Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit who have provided care and comfort for their father.
