Obit for Joseph Clarkson Mason Jr.
Mr. Joseph Clarkson Mason, Jr, age 79, of Laceyville, passed away on Sunday afternoon, December 16, 2012, at the Golden Living Nursing Home, in Tunkhannock, PA with his son, Joseph Clarkson Mason, III at his side.
Joe was born in Honolulu Hawaii on February 10, 1933 the son of the late Reverend Joseph Clarkson Mason and Ellen White Mason.
He grew up in Lockport Illinois and Cortland New York.
Joe served his country from 1951 to 1955 as a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy stationed in Japan.
Joe attended Hobart College in Geneva, NY from 1955 to 1959 where met and later married Mary Wilson.
The couple settled in Connecticut in 1963. There his three children were raised in West Suffield, where he made his home until 1978.
In 1983, Joe married Charlotte Benjamin Rafferty, of Little Meadows, and shared their life together between Laceyville and Friendsville.
Joe made his living as a salesman representing such companies as the R. T. French Co., Lily Tulip, Pennsylvania Life Insurance Company, and several sporting goods companies.
In his retirement, there wasn't a diner or shop in 9 counties that didn't know Joe Mason as he enjoyed traveling and visiting around the area on a daily basis and hanging out with "The gun shop guys."
Joe was an avid hunter and fisherman, he was also an instructor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission with their instruction and certification for bowhunters. He was a member of the Rought Hall American Legion Post #510 in Black Walnut, as well as the Past Chaplin and member of the LaSociete Des 40 Hommes Et 8 Chevaux in Bradford, Sullivan and Wyoming counties.
Joe is survived by his brother & sister in law David & Mary Mason of Hendersonville NC, his son & wife Joseph & Karen Mason of Enfield, CT; daughters and husbands, Anne & Chris Gorman, of Carey, N.C.; Elizabeth & Efstratios Zervas, of Perrineville, N.J.; step daughters, Laurie Ann Massey of Stoney Point, N.C.; and Patty Lin Caudill of Statesville, N.C.; and stepsons, Michael Rafferty, of Friendsville, and Joseph Rafferty, of Little Meadows.
He is also survived by his granddaughter and grandsons as well as many step grand children and step great grand children.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife of 29 years Charlotte Mason in April of 2012 and by a daughter Tiffany Ann Mason on May 25, 2002.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 16, 2013 11:00AM at the St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Tunkhannock, with Rev. Lou Divis, of the church officiating. A luncheon at the church in Joe's honor will follow the service. All are invited to attend. Interment will be in the Lacey St. Cemetery in Laceyville at the convenience of the family. Prior to the funeral services military services will be conducted by the members of the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion, the Dennis Strong Post # 457 American Legion, and the Endless Mountains Post #3583 V.F.W. Also the LaSociete Des 40 Hommes Et 8 Chevaux services will be conducted at that time.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Homes, Main St., Laceyville, PA.
