Joyce Mapes Armitage, age 87, of Wysox, PA passed away on Friday evening, September 28, 2018 at the Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital.

Joyce was born on November 24, 1930 on the family farm in Wilmot Township, PA the daughter of the late Bruce and Ethel Fisk Mapes. She attended the Oak Hill School for her first eight grades then attended Wyalusing High School.

She was employed by the Silcraft Pajama Factory. She then was employed in the Wire Drawing Department with GTE in Towanda, PA for 23 ½ years.

She was a former member of the Moxie Community Church. Joyce loved to spend time with all of her family.

Joyce is survived by her children, Laverne Saxer and his wife Marie of Hartwick, NY, Lorene Ackley and her husband Jerry of Burlington, PA, Kathy Shoemaker and her companion Charles Benjamin of Towanda, PA, and Bret Shoemaker and his wife Conny of Laceyville, PA; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sisters, Freda Canfield and her husband James of New Albany, PA and Alberta Parks of Binghamton, NY; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Lonnie Saxer, on May 12, 1974 in a tragic motorcycle accident and her brothers Laurence and Kenneth Mapes.

Funeral services for Joyce will be held on Thursday evening, October 4, 2018 at 7:00 PM from the Sheldon Funeral Home, 155 Church St., Wyalusing, PA with her son, Reverend Laverne Saxer, and her cousin, Reverend Ron Dyer, officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 5:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will take place on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 12:00 noon at the Lacey Street Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Joyce's name to the Independent Baptist Church, 109 Cherry St. Towanda, PA 18848 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
