Obituary

Marcella Lena Whitney, age 99, of Susquehanna, PA passed away on February 25, 2025 at Barnes-Kasson Hospital in Susquehanna, PA.

Born on July 19, 1925 in Towanda, PA, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mildred (Smith) Jayne.  Marcella was raised on a dairy farm in Stevensville, PA where she learned the value of hard work.  After graduating from high school, she and her beloved sister, Musette, began their working careers at EJ shoes in Endicott, NY.

Marcella married Carl Whitney, a dairy farmer from Beaver Meadows, PA.  Together they shared 64 years of marriage and had three children; Donna (Whitney) Marcho of Gibson, PA, Kathy Whitney of Honesdale, PA, and Gary Whitney who predeceased her.  Marcella was a wonderful homemaker and an excellent cook, known for her skill in canning and freezing fruits and vegetables.  She took great pride in nurturing her family through home cooked meals, knowing the importance of creating a warm, secure home.

She had a passion for country and gospel music and she loved square dancing.  She met her husband at a square dance and, in their golden years, they continued dancing and making new friends.  Marcella was active in her community as a member of the Beaver Meadows Church, the Beaver Meadows Ladies Aide Society, and the Dairyman's League.

Marcella was known for her sharp wit and sense of humor.  In her later years, she became a much beloved resident at Barnes-Kasson Skilled Nursing, where she kept the staff and fellow residents smiling with her witty quips and warm personality.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for all the love and kindness Marcella (Marcie) received while a resident at Barnes-Kasson Nursing Facility.  The outpouring of love and respect shown to her during the final days were deeply humbling.

She is survived by her children Donna Marcho and Kathy Whitney; her grandchildren, Jenni Marcho (Tom Cox) of Peckville, PA and Bradley Marcho (Michelle) of Gibson, PA; and her great-grandchildren, Racheal, Olivia, and Halle Marcho.  Marcella is also survived by several nieces and a nephew.

Along with her son and parents, Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Carl and her sister, Musette.

Private services for Marcella will be held at the convenience of the family and interment will take place at the Beaver Meadows Cemetery.
