Marie M. Berbec McHugh, age 91, formerly of Meshoppen, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday morning, October 8, 2023 at the Allied Hospice Center in Scranton, PA.

She was born in Meshoppen, PA on June 25, 1932, the daughter of the late Michael and Magdalenna Kisil Berbec.

Over the years she was employed as a waitress, a cook, and a seamstress, but most of all she spent her time as a homemaker and raising seven children.

Gardening and planting flowers were her favorite hobbies.  She enjoyed collecting cardinal items and those who knew her knew her collection was very special to her.  At Christmas time she would spend hours making her famous poppy seed bread for each of her family members and friends.  Family gatherings at Christmas always brought her great joy.

She married Francis McHugh in 1984.  The 25 years they were married, a lot of their time was spent traveling.  After a while they decided traveling to Florida for the winter was the best place for them and they spent many happy years there.

She was a devote Catholic of St. Joachim's all her life.

She was predeceased by her husband, Francis McHugh (d. 2008); her brothers, Baby John, Walter, and Harry; sisters, Ann, Eleanor, Josephine, Helen, and Florence; and her fur companions, Lily and Taffy.  She is survived by her children, Joseph Tewksbury (Eilene), of Schenectady, NY, Patricia Rowe of Tunkhannock, PA, Brad Tewksbury (Cheryl) of Springville, PA, David Tewksbury (Tami) of Meshoppen, PA, Mike Tewksbury (Mary) of Yorba Linda, CA; Mary Fenyus (Scott) of Gilbertsville, PA, Tim Tewksbury (Lori) of Meshoppen, PA; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Pines Senior Living Staff, where she resided the last two years, the Allied Hospice Care Unit and her personal caregivers prior to moving to the Pines Senior Living for their care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 11:00 AM from St. Joachim's Roman Catholic Church with Father Patrick Albert officiating.  Interment will follow a the St. Joachim's Cemetery.  A viewing will be held at the church on Thursday morning, October 12, 2023 from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Susquehanna County Humane Society, PO Box 485, Montrose, PA 18801 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516 in honor of her brother, Walter, who was a US Army Veteran.
