Mark E. Honchell, age 71, of Towanda, PA (previously of Wyalusing) passed away Saturday morning, December 8, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Mark was born on May 21, 1947 in Towanda, PA the son of the late Melvin "Mick" (d. 1973) and Charlotte Dibble Honchell (d. 1997). He graduated from Wyalusing High School with the class of 1965 where he first discovered his love of art, engineering and sustainable design. He was a proud graduate of Penn State University in 1970 where he took his Bachelor's Degree in Architecture. During his time at Penn State he was selected for a special design program in Florence, Italy where he studied for one year.
Mark was employed as lead designer by von Storch & Burkavage Architects and Engineers in Media and Clarks Summit, PA; his first project was designing a branch library for the Penn State Reading campus. After his father passed away, he returned to help his mother operate Honchell's Market in Wyalusing. However, he never gave up on his passion to be an architect. From 1975 to 2018 he owned his own architecture practice. He designed many private homes and numerous commercial businesses across the country, making many friends along the way. Mark designed the first ground coupled geothermal closed loop heated hotel in the county and geothermal designs became one of his most successful business ventures.
He was a member of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, the Wyalusing Rainbow Club, and the Wyalusing Valley Museum Association. He was a proud Penn State football fan. Mark thoroughly enjoyed traveling for both business and pleasure with his wife, Henrietta "Henri" Price Honchell, especially to the beach in Avalon, NJ.
He is survived by his loving wife, Henrietta "Henri" Price Honchell, who he shared his life with for nearly 35 years, they married on January 31, 1997, his children Amy Honchell and her husband Timothy Joyce of Chicago, IL, and Sloan Honchell and his wife Amanda "Mandy", of Jim Thorpe, PA; his step-children, Yvonne Sickler and her husband Corey, of Sugar Run, PA and Kim Miller and her husband L. Wayne of Dushore, PA; his step-daughter-in-law, Jennifer Wilcox of Sugar Run, PA; his step-grandchildren, Shanna Anderson and her husband Keith of Lillian, AL, Andrea Miller of Savanah, GA, Clay Miller of New Mexico and Texas, Haley Wilcox of Seattle, WA, Mia Wilcox of Sugar Run, PA, Alyssa Alaniz of Sugar Run, PA, and Alec Alaniz of Lebanon, PA; his step-great-grandchildren, Tori Robinson, Airman First Class Lance Heeman, Kaleb Anderson, Lyndi Heeman, and Greyson Alaniz; his step-great-great-grandson, William Harland Sweeney. Mark is also survived by his sisters, Lynn Westover and her husband Bob of Wyalusing, PA and Barbara Hildebrand and her husband George of White Plains, MD; his close friends Mike and Luanne Kilmer and Bill Cotton; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mark was excited to be expecting his first granddaughter Elliott in February, 2019.
In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his step-son, Lt. Col (ret.) Scott Lee Wilcox (d. 2017) and his cousins David Dibble (d. 1988) and Annette Dibble Merrow (d. 2018).
A memorial service for Mark will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 12:00 noon in the Wyalusing United Methodist Church with Reverend Heather Baker-McAllister of the church officiating. The family will receive friends and family at the church on Thursday, December 13, 2018 from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Interment will take place at a later date at the Wyalusing Cemetery.
