IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary S.
Eberlin
December 8, 1936 – March 7, 2024
Mary Lydia Shupp Eberlin was called home by the Lord on Thursday, March 7th after a brief illness. She was born on December 8th, 1936, in North Eaton Township, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania at the family farm to the late Josiah Jacob Shupp and Blanche Elizabeth Allshouse Shupp. She graduated from Tunkhannock Area High School in 1954 and continued her education at Scranton Lackawanna Business School which she graduated from with high honors in 1955. After graduation from school, Mary worked at the Grange National Bank in both Meshoppen and Laceyville. She also was an excellent seamstress which was her primary occupation while raising her oldest two children. Mary would then work for several years as a medical secretary for Dr. Arthur Sherwood in Tunkhannock. She spent the last 23 years of her work life working as a Process Financial Analyst at Procter and Gamble in Mehoopany. She was one of the transition leaders for the Woodyard and Water Treatment areas to the SAP system (Systems Application and Products in Data Processing) conversion at Proctor and Gamble before her retirement in 1998.
Mary grew up being active in the church throughout her lifetime, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School when her children were growing up. She was also active in the life of the churches that she attended during her lifetime. She was a member of the Meshoppen Community Church in Meshoppen, but also was an active online church participant at her daughter's church, the Succasunna United Methodist Church, in Succasunna, NJ, especially during COVID. Mary was also a member of the Eastern Star. She also spent many years volunteering at the Laceyville Ambulance Association where she became a licensed EMT.
Mary believed her greatest achievement in life was raising her four children. She would spend most of her time outside of work attending their sporting events, musical concerts, church programs and other activities. Her home always had an open door for meals and support for children in the neighborhood and the friends of her children. She continued to be an active grandparent with the same activities for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with her home always open for meals and loving and supportive conversations. She was affectionately known as "Grammy" to her cherished grandchildren, leaving a legacy of love that will resonate for generations to come. Her grandchildren would look forward to her annual Christmas party which included her White Elephant gift exchange which she planned over the course of the entire year.
In her retirement years, Mary became active in her family's genealogy and organized annual family reunions to keep her family bonds strong and cohesive. Mary also spent many years as a caregiver for her brothers Fred and Bertie (Nile) and her mothers-in-law Gladys Bailey and Ruth Eberlin until their passing.
Mary is survived by her four children and their spouses – Linda and Brian Diffley of Succasunna, NJ, Eric and Carmen Eberlin and Douglas and Amy Eberlin, both of Wyalusing, and Jay and Cindy Eberlin of Bowling Green, KY. Mary was the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren along with their spouses and life partners, and 28 great-grandchildren living in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, New Jersey, Texas, North Carolina and Uganda, Africa. She is also survived by her brother Ace (Glenn) Shupp of Tunkhannock, PA, and several nieces, nephews, and their spouses. Mary was blessed with two special friends that have supported her throughout her lifetime – Gail James of Meshoppen and Joanne VanVolkinburg of Laceyville. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased in death by her brother and sister-in-law Fred and Ruth Shupp, sister-in-law Marilyn Shupp, sister-in-law Vivienne Shupp, and brother Bertie (Nile) Shupp.
