Obituary

Michael Joseph McClain, age 63, of Meshoppen, PA passed away surrounded by his loving family Friday, May 4, 2018, at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, PA.

Michael was born on April 29, 1955, in Meshoppen, the son of the late George J. (d. December 31, 1977) and Grace (Kelly) McClain (d. January 11, 2005). He attended Elk Lake High School; after high school, he joined the United States Army where he served his country for four years.

Michael was a business owner in the area of field stone and quarries. He was a skilled stone sawyer and his detailed work was sought after by many. Michael always said that working with his hands in the earth made him feel closer to God.

He was a member of St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Meshoppen.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and drawing. He treasured the outdoors and cherished teaching each one of his grandchildren how to fish. He gained the skill of cooking in the Army and continued to enjoy cooking until he became sick.  Michael was a kind and soft-spoken man who was always well liked by all. He was witty and had a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, with whom he just celebrated his 40 th anniversary with on April 15, Elizabeth "Bette" Helvig McClain, daughters Lauralei Carden and her spouse John of Avoca, PA., Sarah McClain of Jenkins Twp. PA., Annie Larson and her spouse Danny of Wyoming, PA; grandchildren Quinn Carden, Jacob Carden, Claire Carden, Isaiah McClain, Gia Larson, and Chase Larson. He is also survived by his sister, Katherine McClain, of Gettysburg, PA; brothers, James McClain (Barbara), of Whippany, N.J., George "Joe" McClain (Ellen), of Laceyville, PA., Wayne McClain (Beverly) of Navarre, FL.; Kirby McClain (Joanne), of Ulster, PA.; Edward McClain, of Vero Beach, FL.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.  Besides his parents, Michael was preceded in death by toddler brother, David McClain; brothers, Jonathan McClain (March 11, 2011) and Matthew McClain (September 28, 2016).

Family and friends may call at the Sheldon Funeral Home, 8206 SR 6, Meshoppen, PA on Tuesday May 8, 2018 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 noon.  A private funeral service for Michael will follow at the funeral home.  Interment will take place at the St. Bonaventure Cemetery with a Military Honor Service conducted by the members of the Rought Hall Post # 510 American Legion of Black Walnut, PA, the Dennis Strong Post # 457 American Legion of Tunkhannock, PA; and the Endless Mountains V.F.W. Post # 3583 of Mehoopany, PA.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Michael's name to the Relay for Life of Wyoming County, 712 South Keyser Avenue Suite 1, Taylor, PA 18517.
