Obituary

Myrna Heckman, age 76, of Wyalusing, PA (Herrick Township) passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Myrna was born on September 22, 1939 in Pittsburgh, PA the daughter of the late Ada B. (1996) and Robert W. Karn Sr. (1998). She graduated from Quakertown High School with the Class of 1957. After graduation Myrna served her country during the Korean War with the United States Air Force as an Airman Second Class. On June 29, 1962 she married Kenneth Heckman, and they remained happily married up until her passing. Myrna was a sewing machine operator at Phoenix Clothing Factory in Quakertown, PA for 20 years. After the factory closed, she became manager of the China department of Hess's Department Store, which later became Bon-Ton. Myrna was at home amidst the beauty of the china, crystal and glassware and her department was one of the top-producing in the store's chain.

After retirement Myrna and her husband moved to Herrick Township in 1995 after living in Quakertown all of their lives. She was a member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union and an enthusiastic member the Herrickville Sewing Club. She was a supporter of the Herrickville Volunteer Fire Company and HOPS Ambulance. Myrna loved to sew and create needlework. She was very talented at both skills. Many of her daughter's childhood outfits were created by Myrna, even up to her daughter's prom gown. Even when she became paralyzed on one side of her body in 1998, she could still sew better than most, making quilts and mini-quilts up until the time of her passing.

She and her husband loved to travel and pull their camper to Florida, Virginia and South Dakota but their favorite places to travel to was Maine and Nova Scotia. Myrna was also a very great cook and excellent baker. She even spent time wood working, making lots of wooden children's toys for her grandchildren as well as a trestle table and benches for her daughter.

Myrna always had a fun-loving and pleasant personality. She was well known as a very kind and generous person who loved to spend time with others. Even after a stroke paralyzed her left side, her dominant side, and as her list of health complications became longer and longer, Myrna persevered. She taught herself to tie her shoes with one hand, she vacuumed the carpets while sitting in her wheelchair and even continued quilting and sewing with one hand with much more skill and patience than many two-handed seamstresses.

Up until the time of her passing, in the midst of great discomfort, Myrna remained the kind, considerate and undemanding person she had always been.

Besides her husband of 54 years she is survived by her daughter Michele A. Young of Honesdale, PA; son Gary Heckman of Bath, PA; son Barry Heckman and his wife Tina of Quakertown, PA; grandchildren Melissa Ada Young of Honesdale, PA; Brandon Heckman of Bath, PA; Josh Heckman of Collegeville, PA; Alyssa Heckman of New Jersey; Bethany Heckman of Dublin, PA; and brother Robert W. Karn Jr. of Danville, PA. She is also survived by Carrie Wilson, a loving and devoted care taker who Myrna thought of as another daughter, and her special four-legged companion, Pepper.
