Mr. Robert C. Carney Sr., age 84, of 215 Allen St., Meshoppen, PA. passed away early Tuesday morning, January 10,2012, at the Golden Living Center, in Tunkhannock, PA.
Robert was born in Kingston, PA. on March 2,1927 the son of the late Clyde and Dorothy Robertson Carney. Growing up in Forkston and Mehoopany, he was a graduate of the Forkston-Mehoopany High School. After high school, he served his country during World War II, in the US Army from 1945 until 1947. During most of that time he was stationed in Switzerland, near the border of Germany, where he was a medic with the Medical Detachment of the 4th Constabulary Regiment.
After his war service, he was a self employed heavy equipment operator, and truck driver, hauling milk and stone, around the Meshoppen area. For many years, Bob was employed by AB Cole Trucking of Meshoppen. In 1983 Bob started working alongside his long time friend, Rube Ruark, the founder of Penn's Best Trucking. For over the next 25 years, he was employed by Penn's Best, working in Pennsylvania, and at Rube's homes in Georgia, and Florida, until ill health forced his retirement.
Bob was a member of the Rought Hall Post # 510 American Legion in Black Walnut, PA. and was a member or past member of the Meshoppen Fire Co.; the Meshoppen Rod & Gun Club; the Meshoppen Men's Club, and was elected to the Meshoppen Borough Council and Meshoppen Borough Constable. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and farming.
Surviving is his wife of 57 years, the former Margaret A. Tinna Carney, whom he married on April 3,1954. And his three children, Robert C. and Tammy Carney Jr., of Meshoppen, PA.; Debbie and Jim Jones of Charleston, AR; and Sue Hutchinson and Cameron Kelley, of Meshoppen, PA. as well as 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Bob is also survived by a brother David and Joanne Carney of Tucson, AZ, and many nieces and nephews, especially a special nephew and a long time caregiver, Kenny Kramer, of Meshoppen, PA. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean McClaferty who passed away in July 2004.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14,2012, at 11:00 AM from the Sheldon Funeral home, Main St., Meshoppen, PA. with Rev. Tom Mott of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Carney Flats Cemetery, near Mehoopany, PA. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday January 13,2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Military services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday morning preceding the funeral by the membership of the Rought Hall Post # 510 American Legion, the Dennis Strong Post # 534 American Legion, and the Endless Mountains Post # 3583 V.F.W.
