Mr. Roger C. Otten, age 89, of Otten Lane, Forkston twp., PA, passed away on Thursday afternoon, March 12, 2015 at the Golden Living Center, in Tunkhannock, PA, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Wilkes Barre, PA. on May 6, 1925 the son of the late John and Laura Pritchard Otten. Roger was raised and spent all of his life in Forkston, Wyoming County. He was a graduate of the Mehoopany High School, class of 1943. Following his graduation from high school, he served his country in the US Army, serving with the 1060 AAF Base Unit, from 1944 until 1946. On August 13, 1952 he married the former Donna Kraus, and together they raised four children.
From 1949 until 1988, Roger was a Rural Mail Carrier, carrying out of the Mehoopany Post Office. He took great pride in his job, and helped his customers get their mail in a prompt and timely manner. Throughout that time and until his retirement in 2002, he owned and operated Otten's Farm, a dairy farm in Forkston twp., PA. As well as raising dairy cattle, he also owned and raised many horses.
He was a member of the Dennis Strong Post #457, American Legion in Tunkhannock, PA. Many of his favorite hobbies were playing ice hockey, hiking, snowmobiling, reading, horseback riding and genealogy. He also loved traveling all over the United States, including a month long road trip to Alaska in 1980, with his wife. Roger built and ran a saw mill on his farm for many years.
Surviving is his wife of 62 ½ years, Donna Otten of Forkston twp., his children, Eric C. and his wife the former Sue (Rogers) Otten, of Scranton, PA; Christie L. and her husband Lonnie Boecker of Meshoppen, PA; Calvin A. and his wife the former Dawn (Docktor) Otten and Stuart W. and his wife the former Ellen (Rood) Otten, all of Forkston twp.; 8 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Mr. Otten is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Ferne Tiffany, of Laceyville, PA. and several nieces and nephews, and many cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother in law, George Tiffany, who passed away on October 5, 2014.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 16, 2015 at 1:00 PM from the Sheldon Funeral Home, 459 Main St., Laceyville, PA. with Rev. Jay Morris of the Mehoopany United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Forkston Cemetery, in Forkston, PA. at a later date. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday evening March 15, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Military Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday afternoon, with the members of the Dennis Strong Post #457 American Legion, Tunkhannock, PA; Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion, Laceyville, PA; and the Endless Mountains Post #3583 V.F.W., Mehoopany, PA.
