Mr. Samuel Joseph Smith, "Sam", age 74, of Meshoppen, PA, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday evening, May 12, 2021.
Sam was born in Clarksville, WV, on September 28, 1946, the son of the late Burton Lewis Smith, who passed away on September 12, 2002, and the late Harriet Mae Storey Smith, who passed away on January 30, 1972.
Growing up around the Meshoppen area, Sam attended Elk Lake High School. At the age of 16, Sam started driving truck for Dutch Repsher, in Laceyville, PA. For 56 years Sam was a truck driver, for many trucking companies, throughout the Wyoming County area. Long ago, he became an owner operator truck driver, where he drove throughout the United States. Sam also worked a few years as a mechanic for Vandermark Brothers Trucking and Excavating, of Black Walnut, PA.
Throughout his life, Sam had many interests, and hobbies. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball, in the Silvara Softball League, bowling in the Shadow Brook League, for Dibble's Hardware team, he enjoyed many years, driving stock cars at the Herb Harvey Speedway, in Lemon, PA, playing golf at Shadow Brook, and Tall Pines, golf courses, and loved his many golf trips to Myrtle Beach, SC, and he enjoyed many days, hunting in the Susquehanna, Bradford and Wyoming Counties, and fishing in the Susquehanna River and many ponds and lakes. In the last few years, he and his wife loved making their rounds, at many area restaurants, and diners.
On April 17, 1976, Sam married the former MaryLou Brown, with whom he just celebrated 45 years of marriage. Also surviving are his children, Ike Smith and his girlfriend, Liza Smith, of Meshoppen, PA, Jesse Smith and his wife Amanda, of Meshoppen, PA, and his daughter Amanda Moyer, and her husband Ryan, of Dauphin, PA. Sam is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Hannah Smith, and her fiancé, Austin Hall; Isabella Smith; Jeremiah Smith; Leah Smith; Sammy Smith; David Smith; Saddie Smith, Dylan Moyer, and Emma Moyer, and a great-grandchild, Bryson Hall. His grandchildren meant the world to him, he enjoyed their daily visits, which included a lot of humor and life lessons. He is also survived by his sisters, Sharon Thorpe, of Camp Hill, PA, Lorie Anderson, of Laceyville, PA, and Lana (Sidney, aka Tic) Davies, of Meshoppen, PA, and two sister in laws, Kathy Smith, of South Auburn, PA, and Susanna Smith of Meshoppen, PA, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Burton (Chuck) Smith (d. October 24, 2017), Louis Smith (d. August 9, 2012,) and his sister Holly Vaow (d. January 6, 2013) and her husband Robert Vaow (d. January 25, 2012). Sam is also survived by his family of sister in laws, Connie (Dave) Lippner, of Towanda, PA, Becky Smith, of Dallas, PA, Dianna (Ron) Schoonover, of Meshoppen, PA, Laura Lee Baker, of Wyalusing, PA, and Karen Russick, of Lawton, PA, and brother in laws, Eldon (Virginia) Brown, of Laceyville, PA, Timmy (Sandy) Brown, of Montrose, Pa, and Denny (Linda) Brown, of Charlotte, NC.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, May 23, 2021, at 2:00 PM, at the Meshoppen Rod and Gun Club, Byrd Hill Road, in Meshoppen, PA, with Sammy's long-time friend, Rev. Gary Myers of the Meshoppen Biblical Baptist Church officiating. A time for refreshments and telling of stories will be held at the conclusion of the service.
The family would love to give a heart warming thank you to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, for their great care given to Sam.
