William M. Baker, age 94, of Wyalusing, PA formerly of New Albany, PA passed away on Sunday afternoon, December 21, 2014 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA.
He was born on February 6, 1920 in Columbus, OH. He was the only son of the late Andrew M. and Nada Flickinger Baker.
The family moved to Mansfield, PA in 1933. He went on to graduate from Mansfield High School with the class of 1937. He married the former Eulala Buchanan of Mansfield in 1940. Bill served his country in the US Navy from 1943 to 1945 during World War II.
Bill was employed by Penelec (now GPU Energy) for 37 years.
He is survived by his three children and spouses, Marsha Eaton, Marie (Christopher) Waring, and Sam (Mary) Baker; his grandchildren and spouses Ann (Jeffrey) Overman, Wally (Heather) Baker, Micah (Melissa) Baker, Katie (Brian) Lowry, Timothy (Kate) Waring, Sarah Waring, Zachary Snavely, Meghan Snavely; and his great-grandchildren Megan, Colleen, Alivia, Broden, Ashley, Jonathan, Chase, Joshua, Evan, Liam, and Reid. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Eulala, "Ukie" Baker, by his son-in-law, James Eaton, and by his grandson John Eaton.
Active in Community affairs, Mr. Baker was Commander of the American Legion Post # 478 in Mansfield, PA and a member of the American Legion Post # 42 in Towanda, PA and Post # 534 in Wyalusing, PA. He was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years. He was a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge # 163 of Monroeton, PA. He was active in Boy Scouts for 25 years, starting a troop in New Albany, PA and leading a trip to Philmont in New Mexico. He was awarded the "Silver Beaver" award in 1985 for his service to scouting.
In addition to Scouting, Bill was a long time member of the United Methodist Church, serving as Lay Minister, serving on the Board of the Laporte Methodist Home and holding several church lay offices. He served on the New Albany Borough Council as a member and Secretary, was a Charter Member of the New Albany Rotary Village Corp, supporting its efforts to revitalize the village. He served, as well, on the Wyalusing School Board for 16 years and the County School Board for 6 years.
His greatest pleasure in life was his family.
Memorial Services will be held on February 14, 2015 at 10:00 AM from the New Albany United Methodist Methodist Church with Pastor Kitty Keller of the church officiating. A Masonic Service will be held at the church and will be conducted by the members of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge # 163. Internment will held on the same day at the Wyalusing Borough Cemetery at 2:30 PM with Military Honors conducted by the members of the Wyalusing American Legion Post # 534.
