Obituary

William "Bill" L. Zaner, Sr., age 84, of Marsh Street, Wyalusing, PA passed away early Thursday morning, April 9, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Bill was born on October 19, 1930 in New Albany, PA the son of late Lawrence B., who passed away in 1974 and Cora Barth Zaner, who passed away in 2005. He graduated from Dushore High School with the Class of 1949. After graduation Bill was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and played baseball in Alabama, North Carolina, and Virginia. Bill served his country with the US Navy during the Korean War, as he was a Navy Corpsman stationed in Guam.

On March 5, 1955 Bill married the love of his life, Connie Karschner Zaner, and together they raised four children. She passed away on June 28, 2003. Bill later married Myrtle "Delores" Zaner and she passed away on March 8, 2014. Bill worked as a metallurgist for Sylvania for 38 years until he retired from the company in 1989.

Bill was a member of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church as well as the Wyalusing American Legion Post #534. He was a very active member of the American Legion and was one of the founding members. Bill was one of the founding members of the Wyalusing Ambulance Association as well. He was a member of the F&AM Masonic Lodge Wyalusing Lodge #618. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club for Retirees for GTE/Sylvania. Bill was also active and gave much of his time to many parts of the Wyalusing Community such as the Wyalusing Borough Council, Wyalusing Municipal Authority, and Wyalusing Little League. Bill enjoyed the outdoors, as he was an avid hunter. He enjoyed his walks around town with his faithful companion Reggie. Bill loved Penn State and was considered to be the #1 fan in Wyalusing. But most of all Bill dearly loved his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bill was a man who always thought of others first before he thought of himself and because of his unselfishness and kindness he was awarded Rainbow Club's Most Outstanding Citizen for Wyalusing in 2014.

Bill is survived by his four children, his son Scott Zaner and his wife Donna of Tunkhannock, PA; son John Zaner and his wife Mary Anne of Spring Hill, PA; daughter Vicki Ruhf and her husband Gerald "Sike" of Laceyville, PA; and son William Zaner, Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Quakertown, PA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Britney Vincent (Rinell) of Elkton, MD; Noelle Zaner of Warrensburg, MD; Alex Zaner of Tunkhannock, PA; Megan Whiting (John) of New Albany, OH; Lindsey Zaner of Tunkhannock, PA; Samantha and Amanda Zaner of Quakertown, PA; great-grandchildren Layne and Morgan Vincent of Elkton, PA and another great-grandchild on the way. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wives he was preceded in death by his sister Miriam Halton who passed away in 2004.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Wyalusing United Methodist Church with Reverend Dale Russell of the church officiating. Internment will be held at the Wyalusing Borough Cemetery with a military service conducted by the Wyalusing American Legion Post #534. Arrangements were entrusted with Sheldon Funeral Homes, 155 Church Street, Wyalusing, PA.
